5月12日，是南丁格爾–提燈天使的生日。
是Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 這位詩人描述疾病者的守護神 "Saint Philomena" 的詩中，以 " lady with the lamp " 描寫南丁格爾提燈天使的樣貌，自此，提燈的形象一直長駐在人們的心中… 成為南丁格爾的代名詞。(來源網頁) 全詩於文末，摘錄如下 (這… 很難翻譯的… >"<)：

In the great history of the land, 在這片土地的偉大歷史之中
A noble type of good, 以尊貴的形式傳遞美好
Heroic womanhood. 如同英雄一般的女性特質
每年的這一天，身為護理人員的我們總是辦活動紀念與慶祝。慶祝什麼呢？ 有什麼好慶祝的呢？ 是慶祝一年當中有這麼一個屬於自己專業的日子吧。 護理，好像在這一天才容易被看見…
1999 年，在倫敦泰晤士河邊，拜訪了南丁格爾博物館；英國的國小課本也提到到這位偉人；後來又不小心在倫敦街頭，看見她的點燈雕像(下圖)。在英國，她是無人不知曉的人物，在歷史上和國際上，也都有她的重要性。
我總是想，能把自己的聲名傳播到世界各地，必定有過人之處… 更何況是那個時代的女子…
那次見到倫敦的南丁格爾雕像時，舒子看這小油燈，就曾經疑惑著，這樣的燈看得清楚病人嗎？ 不過，歷史上的當時，照說應該是使用右邊這種燈，而非小小的油燈…
小時後，總是聽見南丁格爾點著燈「燃燒自己、照亮別人」的比喻，暗指護理人員為病人犧牲自我的情操。但是，這樣的精神其實並不是現在人的典範，從南丁格爾的相關資料中，可以發現她其實教我們更多、更多。
果然，南丁格爾 (Florence Nightingale; 1820-1910)，終其一生的傳奇人物，只是兩年的克里米亞戰爭讓她發光發熱 (來源網頁)。出生在相當富裕的人家，她的父母親是William Edward and Frances Nightingale… (咦，南丁格爾冠母姓)，在度蜜月的兩年間 (這… 這… 應該不叫度蜜月，叫度蜜年吧) 生下了兩個女兒，第二年在義大利的佛羅倫斯出生的就是南丁格爾，也因為如此，她的名字就叫 Florence。
因為家事顯赫，從小會讀書的南丁格爾在社交圈上也是相當備受矚目，大家都希望這位名媛可以嫁得好歸宿，然而南丁格爾有她自己的想法。1837年，在Embley花園中，南丁格爾聽到上帝的召喚 (Call From God要她去做些上帝的事工，但是當時南丁格爾並不曉得上帝要她做什麼…
1854年的克里米亞戰爭(The Crimean War)，南丁格爾應戰地長官的請求，率領38位護理人員抵達戰地的 Barrack 醫院。起初醫生持反對意見，但後來發現護理人員卻提供很大的幫助，不只是照顧病人，她還為思鄉的士兵傳遞返鄉的訊息、以科學的方法維持健康的環境、在醫院建立閱覽室、等等作為，讓她贏得士兵的認同，獲得 "Lady-in-Chief" 的稱號，讓護理人員不只扮演單純照護的角色，也發揮對大環境整體的影響力。
戰後持續致力於護理教育和公共衛生，為國家建立軍方健康的監測體系，並且成為國家統計學會的第一位女委員，也寫了醫院組織管理的書籍，發行全世界。 在護理教育上建立了訓練制度，出版 Notes on Nursing(目前仍被十多種語言持續出版著)。書中寫到她所理解的護理原則 (the principles of nursing) : 細心的觀察和敏銳發現病人的需要 (careful observation and sensitivity to the patient's needs) 。
晚年的南丁格爾因病長期躺床。1883年英國維多利亞女皇頒贈皇室榮譽，她也獲得其他很多的殊榮。1910年南丁格爾在家中過世，依其遺願葬在 Embley Park, Hampshire。
至今，南丁格爾當時的遠見仍然影響著現代公共衛生、健康照護體系、健康管理者與計劃者。
而其實不只是健康領域的人受其影響，其實南丁格爾的所作所為提供當時女性更多看見自己的機會。她曾經說過一些經典話語，彰顯女性意識和堅強的意志，以下是一些南丁格爾語錄，至今仍發人深省：
• Women never have a half-hour in all their lives (excepting before or after anybody is up in the house) that they can call their own, without fear of offending or of hurting someone. Why do people sit up so late, or, more rarely, get up so early? Not because the day is not long enough, but because they have 'no time in the day to themselves.' [1852] 女性從未在人生中為自己保留半個小時的時間，或是不帶恐懼的去做可能讓人感到訝異的事情；為何每天需要那樣的早起，其實不是因為日子不夠長，是因為整天的時間都是為了別人，而非為了自己。

• I can stand out the war with any man. 我可以和男人一樣的為戰爭挺身而出。

• No man, not even a doctor, ever gives any other definition of what a nurse should be than this — 'devoted and obedient.' This definition would do just as well for a porter. It might even do for a horse. It would not do for a policeman. [1859] 沒有任何人，甚至是醫師，能夠告訴別人護理人員除了 "致力投身和義務" 之外，還有什麼定義。 但這個定義一樣可以用在雜勤或是馬身上，卻不能用在警察身上。
